(en) A pre-existing original coin is cut into several parts. The main reason has often been the need to produce small denominations from large gold or silver modules (for example in the colonies of the West Indies from Spanish dollars). Another reason to cut a coin is to ensure its composition, to fight counterfeit precious coins.
